Fenofibrate
Indications/Uses
Hypercholesterolaemia & hypertriglyceridaemia alone or combined (types IIa, IIb, III, IV, V dyslipidaemias); secondary hyperlipoproteinaemias.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take during meals. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Renal & hepatic insufficiency (eg, biliary cirrhosis). Gallbadder disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Special Precautions
Every 3 mth monitoring of transaminase levels (discontinue if AST & ALT levels is >3 times the upper limit of the normal range). Patient treated concomitantly w/ HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors should be monitored for muscle toxicity.
Adverse Reactions
Digestive, gastric or intestinal disorders (eg, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea & flatulence); skin rashes, pruritus, urticaria, photosensitivity reactions (eg, cutaneous photosensitivity) w/ erythema, vesiculation or nodulation.
Drug Interactions
May increase risk of bleeding w/ oral anticoagulants. Cyclosporin, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors & other fibrates.
